Raging Rivers Worth Waging Caution and Distance!
Seeing Zejke's (sounds like Zeek) post of a video clip of raging waters at a waterfall. I really appreciate the direct advice to steer clear of such water, and be well-prepared with life vests, cell phones, skilled supervision and parental permission (from Both Parents when there's any question about the safety of a place, person or activity, all of which should be withing town and state ordinances)...We really need to have some forums on safety for people of all ages..and Let US-All face it, a life vest can only do so much even in much calmer water. The idea that youth and even adults be supervised if going near or in water should be a basic.
Then Rivers need special NEW RULES...as in Don't go Near or In them when they are at any kind of whitewater level or even a slow river, which can have undertows. You really need to Learn about a body of water (and that would include things like Rip tides in an ocean) and more than I cover at this time. NOT KNOWING and Just thinking it will be okay is NOT OKAY, and really can prove fatal, whether by accident (falling in as some hikers did, which in that case did not land any dead but did result in a rescue effort) or people 'wanting to go in'. The focus needs to be on the PEOPLE as much as the PLACE and the ACTIVITY.
Each factor should not stand alone..all three parts need to be well-researched, planned and followed with respect. In terms of PEOPLE, no one should feel s/he can go alone or even with just another person, particularly if they are young (even under 21, but legally under 18, BOTH PARENTS and really the TOWN/ STATE guidelines should be known and respected). Same goes for 'who can give permission'...one adult cannot just assume they can okay an adventure for a group, and even a group should not assume or hope it will be okay when there is time to CHECK WITH BOTH PARENTS, And when reasonable, SCHOOLS or Recreations Depts, State Guidelines (which maybe need to be updated with links on every SCHOOL WEBSITE, what cool idea and tribute to our Kaelan and all parents who may be out of the loop). The old days of 'kids being kids, boys being boys and such' do not cover this era of new laws and responsibilities..
That's all for now, need to tend to someone homebound who actually could benefit from more volunteer help with a yard, garden and animals (another way to pay our thanks forward for heroes like Kaelan who had hoped to work all summer--to make money, but also to show he was growing up and a capable person..that he was and will be remembered as such. ) Chime in with any good tips for ways kids can help kids, make calls for help early on in any situation or avoid difficult situations ( stay away from trouble and dAnger of all kinds, don't get into cars with conflict or anger brewing or unstable people, anyone whose been drinking even one drink or drugging, even pot, etc...)
PLAN to take a Stand while still on LAND and aim to stay in the game of life and positive living...thanks a bundle..and share ideas for a way to mark Kaelan's 5th year away from us in the physical realm even though I trust he's close in spirit..
